Hi I am Helen a Play and Family Therapist
Grounding myself in small, consistent ways

About Me

Hi I am Helen.

I am a Play Therapist with a strong foundation in supporting young people and families to bring about change through relationship, understanding and empathy.

My professional journey began in schools, where I worked in a variety of roles including Higher Level Teaching Assistant, Forest School Practitioner and Speech and Language Assistant. Beyond schools I worked for Charities and respite homes supporting children and families to navigate the complexities of terminal illness. These roles shaped my commitment to bring about change through connection and empathy by way of creating safety and nurture.

In 2018 I qualified as a Person-Centred Play Therapist with  Child In Mind. Since qualifying I have undertaken further training in Filial Therapy, Polyvagal Theory within play, Embodiment Play and Therapeutic story writing. I am a registered Sandstory Therapist, enabling a young   person to tell their story using sand. In 2021 I became an  accredited Therapist with the British Association of counselling and Psychotherapy. (BACP).

Working with a young person in Play and Creativity is so   magical- to enter a young person’s world through their eyes is both humbling and an honour.  I am constantly in awe of the power of self - body and mind working to exist in the world with whatever is thrown at us, whether we are 2 or 100.  I never take my work for granted, I always put the young person at the heart of my work.

Additionally, I work with parents therapeutically through the Beacon for Parents Programme.   As a mum to 3 teenagers, I   understand the emotional messiness of family life.   I struggle to remember the first few years of my children   being little, it was a blur of no sleep, walking around Tesco with nappies stuck to my back (that did happen) and debating whether to grout the bathroom in dried, leftover Weetabix.  Parenthood is hard and it is messy, not to mention all the external factors outside of the family   home that can put a strain on our ability to manage day to day.  Being invited to work with parents/carers to give them   the tools to view behaviours in a different way brings about real change for the family.

Today I work in a variety of settings and organisations   including schools, charities, non-profit organisations, local   authorities and private practice.  I would love to hear from you if you think I would be a good fit for your needs.
